Fluency Assessments allow students to record themselves reading aloud so teachers can evaluate reading fluency. There are two ways to assign a Fluency Assessment: through the Weekly Checklist or directly from a book.
Method 1: Assign Fluency Assessment from the Weekly Checklist
Go to Weekly Checklist, then go to Step 3 and click on "Reading."
Switch to the Assessment tab.
Select specific students or the whole class.
From the Start/End Assessment dropdown menu, select "Start Assessment."
Check "Fluency Test Only."
Click Next to assign the test.
Method 2: Assign Fluency from a Book
Under Library, select the desired book and add it to the bag.
Click "Create Assignment."
Select specific students or the whole class, then click "Bulk Assign."
Check the "Include Fluency" box (if you do not want students to do quizzes before recording, please uncheck the box of "include quiz")
Click "Create Assignment" again to confirm.
Under Activity History, you can confirm that the fluency tasks have been assigned to students.
Student Experience: Fluency Practice (My Tasks)
Students can view which books have a fluency practice assigned by the teacher from their My Tasks page. The microphone icon turns green when a student has completed the fluency task.
Testing Sound Before Starting
It is very important that students verify their microphone is working before beginning. The only way to confirm this is by recording themselves and listening back to the recording.
Students press the microphone button to test that their voice can be recorded.
Students press the play button to confirm their headphones are working.
If the microphone does not work, students should check the device settings — microphone access must be allowed for Level Learning website.
Note: Please make sure the sound is allowed on your browsers.
Recording the Fluency Assessment
Students click the microphone to begin recording their reading.
Once recording has started, students can pause if needed.
When finished, students click Stop.
Students can listen to their recording or delete it and start over.
Students click "Save and Submit Later" if they need more time, or "Submit" when the recording is complete.
