Avanza Español Unit Assessments

This article introduces the components of the Avanza Español Unit Assessments. All components are available for download and some components can be administered digitally.

Introduction

Avanza Español unit assessments supports the following for all proficiency levels except for Foundations. No assessment is provided for Foundations.

  • Receptive Skills: Listening and Reading

  • Productive Skills: Speaking and Writing

Use the Avanza Español Unit Assessments to check what students have learned at the end of each unit. Each assessment revisits the language, skills, and activity types that students practiced during the unit. Each assessment includes at least one objective for each modality. The number of objectives, questions, and points

may vary by unit. Questions are designed to match the language-development level of the students and include visual supports and familiar formats when appropriate.

Printed Administration

You can download the Assessment Books from the Avanza Español module on the Level Learning Platform. Each assessment book includes the student assessment pages, followed by an answer key. The answer key identifies the correct response for each question and the learning objective assessed by each question. Before administering an assessment, make copies of the student assessment pages for each student. The answer key and learning objective information are intended for teacher use.

Digital Administration

You may administer the Receptive Skills: Listening and Reading section digitally. The digital version includes the same questions as the printed version and records student performance by assessed objectives.

1. Navigation

On the Level Learning Platform, open Avanza Español. Click Online Unit Assessments.

2. Connecting Google Classroom (optional)

Skip this section if you don't use Google Classroom, or if you don't see anything about Google Classroom on the page. You can still assign and take assessments.

The first time you open the tab, you'll see a Connect your learning platform card.

Not ready yet to connect to Google Classroom? Click Skip for now. A yellow banner stays at the top of the tab with a Connect button, so you can come back to it. (If you use a different computer, you'll see the card again — that's normal.)

  • Click Connect Google Classroom.

  • Sign in with the Google account you use to teach your Classroom classes. (It has to be the teacher account for the classes your students are in.)

  • Click Allow when Google asks for permission.

  • You'll land back on the same page with a message like "Google Classroom connected — you@school.org". A green Google Classroom button now sits next to the class selector.

Need to check or disconnect? Click the green Google Classroom button. It shows which account is connected and has a Disconnect option.

Important: connect before you assign an assessment. Assessments you started before connecting will not show up in Classroom.

Your students never sign in to Google through Level Learning. Only you do.

3. Assigning an assessment

On the Progress sub-tab, you will see the names of your students. Change groups or classes by selecting from the drop-down on the top right.

  • Choose the Level from the dropdown.

  • Select the students you want to assess. (The Start/End Assessments button stays grey until you select at least one student.)

  • Click Start/End Assessments → Start Assessment.

  • Select the unit (or units) you want, then click Start.

Each selected student is now assigned with that unit's assessment, and their status will show Assigned. You can assign to the whole class at once. If a student already has it, nothing changes for them, so there's no harm in clicking Start again.

If you're connected to Google Classroom: an assignment called Avanza Español Unit __ Assessment:(worth 100 points) appears in your Classroom class, assigned only to the students you ticked.

If you made a mistake assigning an assessment, you can "End Assessment" to remove the assignment.

4. What students see

Student log into Level Learning and opens Assessments. The assessment is listed by unit, for example "Evaluación: Unidad 1".

  • Students see one question at a time. A bar across the top shows "Question 3 of 8" and how many they've answered so far.

  • Students move between questions with the Previous and Next arrows, by tapping a section of the bar, or by swiping on a tablet.

  • Answers are saved automatically.

  • The full screen button (the expand icon near Close) makes the assessment fill the whole screen. Pressing Esc goes back to normal.

  • When students finish the assessment, they click Submit. If they left something blank, they'll see "You're not done yet!" and can go back or submit anyway. Save & Submit Later is there for students who need more time.

  • They see "Congrats! You have finished your assessment." Their cell in your grid now shows their score.
