Prepare to Start Reading Assessment

A step-by-step guide for teachers on how to assign, start and give reading assessments, manage visibility and prepare students using the Google slides when assessment window is open.

During Assessment Window

  • Focus on Assessments during the assessment window. Your school and/or district leadership has set a designated assessment window.

  • This section will disappear once the assessment window is over.

Assign Assessments on the Teacher Dashboard

  • Click "Start Reading" and the system automatically assigns the appropriate assessments depending on your students' performance.

  • Your school and/or district leadership has set a designated test type.

  • When the orange flag disappears, it means the assessment are assigned successfully. The "Start Reading" button will also disappear as you have successfully assigned the assessments.

Outside Assessment Window

Go to Weekly Checklist

  1. Go to Step 3: Check progress of student practice. Click on "Reading".

  2. Toggle "Assessment"

  3. Select the student(s) that you'd like to assess

  4. Click "Start Assessment"

Select the Assessment Types → Next

Select "Proficiency Level" → Next

Prepare Students for the Assessment

Take a few minutes to review the presentation ahead of time so you’re ready to go.

  • Show the slides the day of or the day before the assessment, and be sure to schedule time for it.

    • Pause to check in and make sure students understand what’s being shared.

    • Wrap up by asking students what strategies they plan to use during the assessment.

  • Remind them that the entire test will be in the target language — especially important if you're using English slides to support early readers.

  • For lower grades (e.g. G1, G2), conduct assessments in small groups (4-5 students)

Plan the Time for the Assessments to Take Place

  • Find time in your week for each student to complete the assessments.

    • Plan for three to five 20-minute sessions within the assessment window so students can complete enough assessments to determine their instructional level.

    • Students can “Save and Submit Later” if more time is needed.

  • For students at higher proficiency levels, the first round of assessments may take longer to establish baseline. Subsequent assessments will require much less time as baseline has been established.

Make Sure Students Can “See” the Assessments

School hours are Monday-Friday 7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. local time.

Outside School Hours

Assessments are automatically hidden outside of school hours. Students can't access them at home, in the evening, or on weekends.

Note: If teachers need to assess students outside of school hours, they can set visibility to "always visible" which overrides school hours.

During School Hours

Once teachers "start" assessments, by default, students can view the assessments.

If you want to prevent unsupervised attempts, you can set visibility to "hidden".
