How Do Licenses Work? (Transfers, Mid-Year Changes, and Carrying Progress to a New School)

How student licenses are assigned, whether they can be transferred, and what happens to a student's history when they move and how to purchase more licenses.

License Seats & Student Changes

A license seat is only counted as used when a student is in an active group. If a student is removed from a class or school at any point during the year, their seat is automatically freed up — as long as the change is updated in Clever or ClassLink.

For schools using CSV rostering, students must be manually removed from the active group for the seat to be freed. To add new students, contact your Level Learning account manager.

Can I transfer a license from a student who left to a new incoming student?

Yes. When a student is removed from an active group, their seat becomes available automatically. A new student added to the group will simply take that open seat — no manual transfer needed.

Can a license move between students mid-year?

Yes. License seats adjust automatically throughout the year based on active group membership. There's no fixed assignment — if a student leaves a group, the seat is released; if a new student joins, they occupy a seat.
