Relationship between Phonics and Reading (Avanza/Boost)

Understand how Level Learning automatically determines whether a student needs Phonics practice, Reading/My Tasks, or both — based on their assessment results. Applies to Spanish (Avanza) and English (Boost) only.

Literacy development is a continuum. Avanza-Boost automatically identifies the type of practice a student needs as a student's literacy grows through these phases:

  • Foundational Skill Practice Only as the student is not ready to read.

  • Simultaneous development of foundational and reading comprehension skills.

  • Foundational skills learning is completed and continue to deepen reading comprehension skills.

After reading assessments are given, base on student assessment results, the system automatically identifies whether a student needs practice in Phonics only, Reading Skills only, or Both.

  1. Not reading yet — your student only sees Phonics Practice. No books show up under My Tasks. A student is considered not ready to read when:

    1. The student's reading assessment for literature is at the lowest level (e.g. level C)

      AND

    2. The student's phonics assessment is below

      1. Spanish (Avanza) - Completion of all Open Syllables (Unit 6 is the last unit covering Open Syllables)

      2. English (Boost) - Completion of Level K (English Phonics is made up of First Steps, Level K, Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3)

For a student to transition from Phonics Only/Not Ready to Read to "Building both Reading and Phonics", you will need to re-assess the student's reading comprehension. See this article on how to assess a student anytime during the year regardless if the assessment window is opened.

2. Ready to read — Phonics Practice turns off completely, and your student's work shifts fully to books and quizzes (reading comprehension).

3. Building both at once — your student sees Phonics Practice and books/quizzes at the same time.
